Friends toasting over mussels and cocktails at Fishing with Dynamite

A love letter to summer by the shore.

Before the toques and the stars, there were bare feet on a dock: crab pots, clam rakes, and long Virginia summers where dinner came straight out of the water. This restaurant brings that feeling to Manhattan Beach.

Chef David LeFevre cooked his way around the world, from Michelin-starred kitchens to street stalls, before landing in Manhattan Beach and deciding the neighborhood needed a place that took seafood seriously without taking itself seriously.

Fishing with Dynamite opened in 2013 as his celebration of summers spent on Virginia's Eastern Shore and SoCal's vibrant beach communities. The name is an old fisherman's phrase for overkill, which feels about right for the amount of firepower packed into a 32-seat room.

Thirty-two seats, zero pretense.

The dining room is the size of a beach cottage on purpose. You'll sit close, talk loud, and probably make friends with whoever's shucking. The raw bar anchors the room; the day's oysters are chalked up like a surf report.

Old school means chowdah', crab cakes and lobstah' rolls done with total respect. New school means hamachi with apple ponzu, ceviche tostadas, and chilled soba with cured ora king salmon, worldly maritime flavors that have kept us in the Michelin Guide for seven years and counting.

One chef. Five kitchens.

Since M.B. Post's debut in 2011, Chef David has built a family of restaurants in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, all just a bike ride apart.

“Passionately delivering pristine seafood that blows our guests away.”
